The Welsh Liberal Democrats have today launched their campaign to send a Welsh Lib Dem to the European Parliament in June.

Visiting Coleg Gwent in Newport, Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats was joined by lead European candidate, Alan Butt Philip and Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats to look at further education and skills provision in the area that can help prepare young people for the eventual upturn in the economy.

Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat leader said:

"It's a great opportunity to be here in Newport today to launch the Welsh Liberal Democrat European campaign with Alan and Kirsty. The Welsh Lib Dems are serious about Europe and serious about sending Alan to Europe.

"Wales needs a Liberal voice in Europe to contribute to the process of getting to grips with the world economic situation, international terrorism and climate change.

"Wales can benefit so much from Europe and European funding and we should be using that funding to create highly skilled green jobs that can provide Wales with a green route out of recession.

"Coleg Gwent does an excellent job of providing skills for young and unemployed people around the area, however, as we've recently seen, the Labour-Plaid Welsh government are under funding this vital sector than can provide skills and training for people in this area and around Wales.

"We need to invest in people, in their skills and in their training and ensure that European money makes a difference here in Wales."

Alan Butt Philip, lead European candidate said:

"The European elections are very important for us as a party. This is our opportunity to have a Liberal Welsh voice in Europe, playing a vital role in overcoming global problems that are beyond the control of individual nations. We believe that Wales is stronger within Europe and poorer apart and I will ensure that the people of Wales have a strong representation in Europe through their Welsh Lib Dem MEP.

"For too long, Labour, Plaid Cymru and Tory MEPs have been weak in representing the views of the people of Wales in Brussels. There is much to be gained from being part of the European Union. I should know because I'm a university lecturer specialising in Europe and a former advisor on European issues to the House of Lords. Wales can benefit a great deal more from this ever growing community. Not only do I know what Europe can give to the people of Wales, I also know what the people of Wales want from Europe.

"A vote for the Welsh Liberal Democrats on June 4th is a vote for a stronger Wales in Europe."
